I would have liked to be American,
I wish I was Amanda Gorman,
From the height of my twenty-three years,
Dressed perhaps in velvet,
In the election of Joe Biden,
To make a speech,
In honor of all these young people,
Black, white or other,
But I am not that famed poet.
I would have liked to be Vee Kativhu,
Study at Harvard, and show,
How beautiful my life is
And radiant,
When I come to the aid of these children!
I would have liked to be American,
I would have liked to be Marsai Martin,
Winning these Oscars like a queen,
And get up with a smile every morning.
I would have liked to be American,
I would have liked to be one of those girls,
Of these women,
Of these heroines,
Of these clappers,
That make me languish and dream.
I would have liked to be me too
A fighter,
A model,
An example,
For these thousands,
And the support of millions benefit.
I would have liked to be me too
Recognized,
Invited
To the White House,
Or in one of these palaces, yeah,
Sumptuous and full of charm,
To make a speech,
Without being taken aback,
By these fiery looters,
And be praised by billions.
Yes I would have wanted all of that.
But I'm just me
A little Togolese and African,
Who stands up and out,
From the crowd,
From the pain,
Despite her efforts, her exploits,
Her weaknesses, her strengths!
Yes I am me
Strong, upright, perennial,
Unshakeable,
African girl,
Girl of the world,
Daughter of the sky,
And every day I'll get u
Again and again,
I will fight,
Always and stronger,
To make my voice heard,
Whatever my language,
Whatever my faith
My status or my yoke!
Despite my failures,
Despite the dry climate,
I will fight endlessly,
As with repeated blows of beaks!
I will not give up,
I will take more steps,
Yes I will do all of that!
With high vehemence
Like a torch of excellence,
As a sign of gratitude,
To all those who precede me,
To all those who teach me
And who up there or down here
Will never be weary,
Of this common and titanic fight
